In preparation for when you take down the Christmas decorations, hoover up the New Year's Eve confetti and ditch the chocolates, we've got a list of wonderful events and activities for you to enjoy in the capital.

New Year in London

The capital's New Year celebrations are known around the globe. The mesmerising fireworks are broadcast across the country to millions of people, but wouldn't you rather be seeing them with your own eyes? Head down to the Thames, where you can stand in awe as the sky lights up at midnight.

The next day, have a leisurely stroll around London's streets, and catch the New Year's Day Parade making its way along a 2.2-mile route through the city. With over 8,500 performers, including Pearly Kings and Queens, marching bands and cheerleaders, the American-style street party is not to be missed.

Spend some Christmas money

January in London is perfect for bargain hunters, as the high street and high-end stores open their doors to huge savings. Shop at some of the world's top retail destinations, such as Oxford Street and Covent Garden “ not to mention the plethora of fantastic shopping centres and boutiques."

On top of all this, many hotels have some fantastic reductions at this time of year. With most people staying at home in January after indulging so much at Christmas, the hotels and tourist attractions are often less busy.

Celebrate the New Year¦ again

Chinese New Year 2017 falls on Saturday 28 January, and there are so many ways to celebrate in London. Some of the festivities are completely free to attend, including those at Trafalgar Square, Chinatown and across the West End. The streets will be filled with colourful and ornate decorations, welcoming the Year of the Rooster.

Whilst there, sample a wide range of delicious dishes at one of Chinatown's restaurants or street food venders.

Get arty

The London Art Fair is back for the 29th time at the Business Design Centre. Witness artwork from more than 125 galleries, by the world's leading artists. You can also catch a glimpse of early twentieth century pieces, contemporary photography and work from less established galleries.

Catch a film screening

London Short Film Festival highlights new and popular filmmakers with a range of screenings, live music, workshops and talks. The festival has proven very popular in previous years and the new programme will be released at the end of 2016. Last year, 1,500 filmmakers submitted their work, which ranged from dramas and comedies to documentaries and experimental short films.

Honour a poet

London might not be the first place you'd think of celebrating a Scottish poet, but there will be plenty of opportunities to eat, drink and dance in honour of Robert Burns.

Dig into haggis and tatties at one of the many restaurants and bars that host Burns Night events. And afterwards, wash it all down with some smooth Scotch whisky.
