Safety on Board

Supervise your young children as they move through the carriages as trains can move from side to side suddenly. Help us reduce accidents on board by ensuring they keep their fingers away from the sliding internal doors and clear of the external doors when they are closing.

Do I have to pay for my child’s ticket?

If you’re travelling with children under five, you don’t need to book a ticket for them as they travel free of charge in Standard and First Class with a fare paying adult. However, this does mean they won’t have a seat reservation and might have to sit on your knee on busy services. If you want your child to have a seat of their own, you can book a child ticket for them when you book direct with us on our website or app

Children between the ages of 5 and 15 can get 50% off the standard adult fare.

At what age do children have to pay to travel?

Children under 5 years old can travel for free and children aged 5-15 travel for a discounted price. Anyone over the age of 15 will need to pay for a full price adult fare to travel with Hull Trains.

Are children’s train tickets cheaper?

All children aged 5-15 can benefit from a discount of at least 50% on most train tickets.

Do I need to book a ticket for all the children even if they’re under 5?

Up to 2 children under 5 can travel for free in both Standard Class and First Class with each fare paying passenger. Please note, children will be expected to vacate a seat for a fare paying passenger.

If you want to guarantee them a seat, you will need to purchase a child’s ticket for your journey via our website or app by adding a child passenger.

Can I save money on tickets with a Family railcard?

Yes, you can save 1/3 on adult train tickets and 60% on children’s train tickets. Up to 4 adults and 4 kids can travel together with this railcard. Find out more here

Can children travel alone on Hull Trains services?

If our colleagues see a child alone on one of our trains or they have any concerns, they’ll contact the British Transport Police for help.

If your child is taking a trip on their own, please read these helpful tips from the British Transport Police.
