What is a Railcard?

A railcard is specific to the individual passenger allowing discounted train travel. There are a range of different railcards avaialble depending on your age or whether you travel as a group. Some railcards are available as physical cards or digital-only making it easy to bring it along with you for your journey. You must travel with your railcard to validate your discounted ticket.

What is a Railcard?

A Railcard is a discount card that you can apply when purchasing train tickets. It will save up to 1/3 off the price of eligible train tickets. It’s an easy way to save money on your journey’s all year round. There are a range of railcards available for different types of people making it easy to find one that suits your needs.

What Railcards are available?

There are different railcards available, some with age restrictions. The main railcards are:

16-17 Saver, 16-25 Railcard, 26-30 Railcard, Two Together Railcard, Senior Railcard, Family & Friends Railcard, Disabled Persons Railcard, Veterans Railcard, Network Railcard 

How much is a Railcard?

Railcards cost £30 for 1 year, except for the Disabled Persons Railcard which is £20. Some Railcards have the option of purchasing as a 3 year card for £70 offering better value than the 1 year option.

How do I use a Railcard?

Once you’ve purchased your Railcard, it’s easy to apply this to your booking. When searching for your journey, simply add your Railcard in the search box and fares will automatically show as discounted (if valid and eligible). 

What are the travel restrictions with Railcards?

Depending on the Railcard you have, they generally can be used during off peak times, weekends, and bank holidays. Some can be used on peak service with a minimum fare. The below shows the restrictions across the main railcard types:
  • 16-17 Saver – No restrictions on when you can travel
  • 16-25 Railcard – A minimum fare of £12 applies if travelling before 10am Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays)
  • 26-30 Railcard – A minimum fare of £12 applies if travelling before 10am Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays)
  • Family & Friends Railcard – Valid at any time except it cannot be used on journeys entirely within the London and South East area on morning peak time services, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays)
  • Two Together Railcard – Not valid for use on services before 9:30am Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays)
  • Senior Railcard – Valid at any time except it cannot be used on journeys entirely within the London and South East area on morning peak time services, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays)
  • Network Railcard – Not valid before 10am Monday to Fridays (excluding bank holidays) and a minimum fare of £13 applies at all times.
  • Veterans Railcard – A minimum fare of £12 applies if travelling before 10am Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays)
  • HM Forces Railcard – A minimum fare of £12 applies if travelling before 10am Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays)
  • Annual Gold Card – Not valid before 9:30am Monday to Fridays (excluding bank holidays)
