What we're doing to reduce our impact on the environment
We all have a responsibility, both at corporate level and as individuals, to reduce the effect we have on the environment around us. First Hull Trains will be completing a review to ensure we remain compliant with environmental legislation and work in as an environmentally responsible manner as possible.
- Reduction in engine idling time - In January this year we introduced an engine management programme to reduce idling time and hence fuel and emissions. As part of FirstGroup we monitor our fuel usage per mile and can confirm that this action has shown an improvement in fuel economy.
- Use of bio-fuels within the engines - Presently bio-fuel is on trial with Arriva, formerly Virgin Cross Country. We attend three-monthly engine reliability meetings with a number of operators and the experiences of using bio-fuels are discussed at these meetings so we may understand the benefits available.
- Low E glass - The body side windows on the Class 222 are "metalised", which improves heat retention within the vehicle and radiated heat from the sun out by 20%. The net effect being a reduction in energy to heat/cool the vehicles throughout the year.
- Waste management - Our supply and waste chains are being reviewed to ensure we capture any opportunities to reduce / recycle waste and we are attempting to locate a suitable opportunity to recycle waste from on train. While staff can readily separate differing materials that may be recycled, Hull City Council is currently challenged in handling / recycling waste. We are constantly committed to reviewing this position.
- Use of recycled paper - We are now endeavouring to produce all marketing materials, timetables, leaflets, posters etc on recycled paper - this started with the launch of our winter timetable in early December 2007.
